Teachers day 2006
Another teacher’s day! Many sermons to teachers flow.
From whom?? By those ( barring a few) who I am sure may shirk to put their hand on their heart and say that they followed the path of truth and commitment their teachers spoke when they were in school!! A few teachers are awarded for their dedicated service. More so because they lived and worked as”teachers “ as our good books say! They did not demand concrete roads nor high tech buses but some times walked be it sun or rain to do what they wanted to do! They did not ask for more ( they should not….it’s unethical!) but contributed much more than demanded because they were driven by their own inner vision / mission for the good of the land.
How on earth do the people who advise teachers believe that values can be taught ?A conscientious teacher who displays sincerity, commitment and has passion for true learning ,finds few takers today. The world out side the school campus is driving the children crave for objects which when possessed defines success. Many a parents in the cities are a victim of this mad consumerism and all they wish they children to do is to follow stereotyped jobs( being engineer or a doctor is reduced to that !) which fetches fast money. I presume that at any given time the ratio of good Vs bad is proportional to the population. Teachers neither make society good nor bad. As the society so the teacher. Do not expect the people in this profession to be other wise. There was a time when a teacher’s position was respected and meritorious ( not necessarily with 90 and above marks!) people opted to be one. Today when merit students do not opt to be teachers the society’s loss is great and it has to restore the teacher’s image before it is too late! Alas a conscientious teacher is not made in factories!
